PHÂN BIỆT NHANH 4 TỪ DỄ NHẦM: SAY – TELL – SPEAK – TALK

Bài viết dành cho người học tiếng Anh ở mọi cấp độ, giúp bạn dùng đúng 4 động từ “nói” tưởng giống mà khác hẳn nhau.

1) Ý NGHĨA & CÁCH DÙNG

Từ Nghĩa chính Có tân ngữ người? Cấu trúc hay gặp Ngữ cảnh điển hình
say nói (điều gì) Không bắt buộc (thường không có người trực tiếp sau động từ) say + “…”; say (that) + mệnh đề Trích dẫn lời nói, nội dung câu nói
tell bảo/nói với (ai) Có (bắt buộc người nhận tin) tell + someone + (that) + mệnh đề; tell + someone + to + V Truyền đạt thông tin/ra lệnh cho ai
speak nói chuyện / phát biểu (trang trọng/kỹ năng ngôn ngữ) Không cần tân ngữ trực tiếp speak + language; speak to/with someone; speak about/on + topic Phát biểu, nói ngôn ngữ, tình huống trang trọng
talk trò chuyện (thoải mái, thân mật) Không cần tân ngữ trực tiếp talk to/with someone; talk about + topic Tán gẫu, trao đổi thân mật

  • say

    • She said “hello.”

    • He said (that) he was busy.

  • tell

    • Please tell me the truth.

    • They told us (that) the class starts at 7.

    • Mom told me to do my homework.

  • speak

    • She speaks English and Korean.

    • The CEO spoke about the new strategy.

    • May I speak to Ms. Linh?

  • talk

    • Can we talk about your plan?

    • I love talking to my grandparents.

3) CẶP CÂU DỄ NHẦM 

  1. He told me the news. ✅ | He said me the news. ❌

  2. She said she was fine. ✅ | She told she was fine. ❌

  3. I want to speak to the manager. ✅ | I want to say to the manager. ❌

  4. Let’s talk about the schedule. ✅ | Let’s speak about the schedule. (được, nhưng trang trọng hơn)

4) CỤM TỪ THƯỜNG GẶP

  • say: say hello/sorry/thanks; say a prayer; say nothing/anything

  • tell: tell the truth/a lie/a story/a joke; tell the time; tell someone off; tell the difference

  • speak: speak English/fluently; speak highly of; speak up/out; speak your mind

  • talk: talk business/sense; talk nonsense; talk someone into/out of (doing) sth

5) LỖI PHỔ BIẾN & MẸO SỬA NHANH

  • ❌ say someone → ✅ tell someone

    Tell luôn “đi kèm người nhận”: tell + someone + …

  • ❌ tell + câu trích dẫn trực tiếp trong ngoặc → dùng say

    She said “I’m ready,” not told “I’m ready.”

  • speak vs talk:

    speak trang trọng/kỹ năng ngôn ngữ; talk thân mật/trao đổi.
    Meeting trang trọng: The director spoke about profits.
    Bạn bè: We talked about our trip.
